Fannyland delves into a loopy yet tender alt rock psychedelic with “The Adventures of Mr. Potoilethead”. Lyrics possess a truly bizarre sense of storytelling, as they explore truly surreal yet playful scenarios. At times, reminiscent of the laid-back style of early Meat Puppets albums, there is something quite soulful about the performance. Songs work together to create a rather surreal sensibility, with off-kilter rhythms and an overall wonderful hazy atmosphere. Melodically rich, Fannyland allows for a great number of stylistic twists and turns that adorn the sound.
Setting the tone for the collection is “I’m Not Smart”. With this piece, they tap into an endearing, dreamy atmosphere one that describes love with a tree. Much faster in tempo is the angular work of “Peanut Sized”. Within this track, they opt for an approach that sounds akin to Slint’s debut album “Tweez” with the bass guitar leading the way forward. Rather bubbly in nature the way the song unfurls gives it a sense of urgency. Laid back to its very core is the spacious arrangement of “Pork Chop Girl” where guitars glisten leisurely as the song builds up into a wonderful inviting groove. Punk-infused to its very core is the dominating nature of “Vampire State Building”. Rather charming in nature is the sweetness of “Father’s Day”. Choosing to slow things down quite a bit is the muscular sound of “The Painted Man Haunts My Dreams”.
